Principal / Lead Digital and
Mixed Signal Radio Architect (Wi-Fi)

Location: Kanata, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid work arrangement possible)

Company Overview: Edgewater Wireless Systems Inc. is a leading innovator in Spectrum Slicing technology, developing advanced Wi-Fi silicon solutions, access points, and IP licensing designed to meet high-density and high-quality-of-service needs. Our patented Multi-Channel/Link technology revolutionizes Wi-Fi by enabling multiple concurrent channels per radio, addressing the growing demand for high-performance wireless connectivity.

Position Overview: We seek a highly experienced and motivated Principal / Lead Digital and Mixed Signal Radio Architect to spearhead the architecture, design, and development of our next-generation Wi-Fi silicon solutions. This pivotal role involves defining the technical direction, significant initial hands-on technical contribution, and foundational team leadership as we build our capabilities. You will be instrumental in innovating and defining our strategy for cutting-edge mixed-signal chipsets, incorporating advanced technologies for Analog Front-Ends (AFEs), high-speed ADCs/DACs, and exploring novel AI/ML-driven baseband processing techniques for standards including Wi-Fi 7 and beyond. This role requires building and leading a new team, potentially comprising in-house and subcontracted resources, evolving from a primarily hands-on focus towards greater technical oversight as the team grows. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of mixed-signal design, wireless communication systems, Wi-Fi standards, baseband algorithms, AI/ML potential in communications, and have a
proven track record of leading complex silicon projects from concept to production.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architect and lead the development of complex mixed-signal Wi-Fi chipsets, defining subsystem requirements and optimizing system performance, power, area, and cost trade-offs.
  • Perform hands-on design and analysis of critical blocks, including AFEs, ADCs/DACs, PLLs, filters, and baseband processing units.
  • Investigate, define, and drive innovation in advanced baseband algorithms, including identifying and potentially implementing AI/ML techniques for functions like channel estimation, equalization, interference mitigation, beamforming, and adaptive modulation/coding.
  • Drive block-level specifications and oversee the design process, ensuring alignment between analog, digital, and firmware/software teams.
  • Establish and oversee mixed-signal simulation flows, validation strategies, and silicon bring-up/characterization.
  • Build, lead, and mentor a nascent team of digital, analog, and mixed-signal engineers (including managing external/subcontracted resources), fostering collaboration and technical excellence.
  • Collaborate closely with algorithm developers, firmware engineers, and system architects to ensure end-to-end system functionality and
    performance.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging standards (e.g., Wi-Fi 7/8 features like MLO, 320MHz channels, 4K QAM), and advancements in mixed-signal design, baseband processing, and AI/ML for wireless communications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or related field, with a strong focus on RF, Mixed-Signal IC design, or Communication Systems.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in digital and mixed-signal IC design, with significant experience in wireless communication chipsets (preferably Wi-Fi).
  • Proven experience architecting and implementing complex mixed-signal SoCs, including AFEs, high-speed data converters (ADC/DAC), PLLs, and RF transceivers.
  • Deep understanding of digital signal processing (DSP) concepts and their application in wireless baseband processing (e.g., filtering, FFTs,
    equalization, demodulation, channel coding).
  • Strong knowledge of Wi-Fi standards (Wi-Fi 6/7/8) and their silicon implementation challenges.
  • Demonstrated experience leading silicon development projects; experience building or managing engineering teams is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in system modeling and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB, SystemVerilog, Verilog-AMS).
  • Experience with mixed-signal design flows, verification methodologies, layout considerations, and silicon validation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, with experience coordinating diverse technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience applying AI/ML techniques to wireless communication problems (e.g., physical layer optimization, MAC layer enhancements, network management).
  • Familiarity with baseband algorithm development and implementation in hardware (RTL).
  • Experience with digitally-assisted analog techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with deep sub-micron CMOS technologies.
  • Experience with Edgewater’s Spectrum Slicing technology or other multi-channel approaches such as leveraged in DOCSIS or 5G.

What We Offer:

  • This is a unique opportunity to be a key, early leader in building a new team and defining the architecture for Edgewater’s next-generation Wi-Fi silicon, directly shaping the future of our core technology and shaping the global Wi-Fi standard.
  • Join a leading innovator in wireless technology and drive advancements in areas like mixed-signal design, Wi-Fi 7/8, and cutting-edge AI/ML applications for communications.
  • Start with deep hands-on technical contribution and grow into a broader leadership role as you build and mentor your team. We support professional development to help you achieve your career goals.
  • Work in a stimulating environment where collaboration and innovation thrive, with the flexibility of a hybrid work model.
