Comcast, Nokia also members of NGH provisioning working group demonstrating seamless, secure integration between WiFi and mobile networks without user involvement; can improve 5G technology

October 31, 2018 – London, England–Edgewater Wireless Systems Inc. (YFI; TSX.V) (OTCQB: KPIFF), making WiFi better with its next-generation WiFi3™ – multi-channel WiFi chipsets and access point solutions for high-density wireless networks – is part of a Wireless Broadband Alliance (“WBA”) working group that demonstrated Next-Generation Hotspot (“NGH”) provisioning at WBA’s annual Wireless Global Conference yesterday. Other members of the working group include Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA), Nokia (HEL: NOKIA), Global Reach and BSG Wireless.

“According to Market Research Engine, a global research and consulting organization, the 5G technology market size will exceed 90 million by 2023.  As WiFi is imperative to 5G, evidenced by the majority of mobile carriers now using some form of WiFi calling, our working group’s solution stitches mobile and WiFi networks together,” said Eric Smith, Vice President of Product for Edgewater Wireless. “This allows carriers with vast WiFi networks to seamlessly open those networks, expanding 5G coverage in buildings and public spaces, which is essential to ensure users and IoT devices will have a high quality, and secure experience in the 5G networks of the near future.  We are elated that WiFi3TMhas been selected to advance this innovative technology.”

During the demonstration, Edgewater’s aera™WiFi access point, powered by WiFi3™,was configured to perform a secure authentication process designed and developed by the members of the working group. This authentication process is designed to allow for secure handoffs from mobile networks to WiFi networks without user intervention. During the demonstration, the aeraTMaccess point took an authentication request from the WiFi client, contacted a server configured by Nokia, and passed back a secure authentication package that initiated a dynamic handover to a secure network – all without the phone user’s involvement. This is a significant milestone for seamless and secure wireless communication.

According to WiFi NOW, a leading industry newsletter, Wi-Fi carries 70-75% of smartphone traffic in the USA. “Edgewater Wireless has been at the forefront of WiFi’s future with its WiFi3™ technology, enabling multi-channel traffic over a single radio,” said Andrew Skafel, President and CEO of Edgewater Wireless. “As 5G moves forward, Edgewater is working alongside technology giants and disruptors that are developing applications on our chipset, to ensure that commercial and residential WiFi will not just meet but exceed user expectations, which will continue to grow rapidly.”
